Based on the Agreements with the Sister Schools, Huamei School has been carrying out the student exchange programs in recent years. Among which, some programs are conducted in winter or summer vacations, while others are implemented during school years, including the two exchange programs with the Indonesian school, Frateran Catholic High School (FCHS) and the German Graf-Münster-Gymnasium Bayreuth. In this model, both schools host students and teachers to attend a 2 weeks’ culture exchange program in the counterpart schools and the country.
Such exchange program aims to provide chances for students of both parties to be fully exposed to a different culture environment. Taking the program with the Indonesian school as an example, students are not only integrated with local and international students to study and live on campus/homestay, but also involved in traditional Chinese/Indonesian courses like Chinese Kong Fu, tea ceremony, calligraphy, cooking on the Chinese side and Batik Hand Drawing, “angklung” (Indonesian traditional ensemble), and traditional dance on the Indonesian side, and participate in outdoor activities and field trips. The program provides a wonderful platform for students to experience different cultures in general, and education in particular.
In 2016 winter and 2017 spring the first HMIS-FCHS exchange program was successfully conducted with joint efforts from both schools and Yongchun Chinese Language Training Centre, Surabaya of Indonesia. After that, in 2017 winter and 2018 Spring the second HMIS-FCHS exchange program was held even better in terms of the increasing number of students and the organization of exchange activities.
In 2017 Winter, a group of 9 students and 1 teacher from Huamei School experienced the German middle school courses in Graf-Münster-Gymnasium for a week, and also visited 5 countries in East Europe for another 5 days. It was a culture exchange winter program for the students of Huamei German language class. In March, 2018, a group of 10 students and 2 teachers from German Graf-Münster-Gymnasium Bayreuth joined the exchange program at Huamei International School. Together with Chinese students, they experienced regular Chinese classroom teaching and learning and participated in Chinese traditional arts and sports classes within 10 days at school. On weekends, the German students went home stay with their Chinese buddies and they both had wonderful time with the Chinese families.
Based on the experience of the first round of exchange of both parties, the exchange programs are refined in terms of contents and organization, and we are looking forward to more productive and rewarding programs for the students in the years to come.
