Battle of the books Reading Article
Shared :

Battle of the Books is a reading incentive program for students in all grades.  Students read a selection of books and come together in groups to demonstrate their abilities and test their knowledge of the books they have read.  The competition enhances the students’ interest in literacy as well as their collaboration skills. They compete collaboratively for three rounds in anintense quiz show.

This year, Huamei GIA was invited to participate in the Pearl River Delta Library Association, PRDL Battle of the Books competition. Students from grades five and six met daily during lunch to read and discuss ten books.  The teachers split up the selections so we could coach the students in expert groups.  My first selection was Ties that Bind, Ties that Break by Lensey Namioka.  This book was about the trials and tribulations of a young Chinese girl who refused to have her feet bound.  I appreciate that the competition included this selection because it exposed the students to truly relatable realistic fiction.

The competition washeld at the International School of Dongguan. Students competed with the GIA principles of dignity and respect.

Congratulations to Grade Five in GIA for winning first place.  You did an amazing job and it was an honor to coach you through the process. Thank you Mr. Bayne and Mr. Weber for working hard with me to get the students ready for the competition.  Next year we will have more teams on the top!  Any primary to high schoolers that missed out this year, come read with us for next year!
