Is students’ emotion important in English teaching and learning? English as a second language for Chinese students, it is not easy to learn it well for many of them. At the beginning, students are exceedingly resting in English learning. They show great enthusiasm during the classroom activities. They enjoy reading, answering questions in the classroom, and asking questions. However, the student’s affect in English learning has changed with the increasing of English vocabulary, grammars, reading and the development of the teaching activity. Some of them still keep great interest in English learning. Nevertheless, at the most of time, many of them are puzzled at what the English teacher teaches in class. They have difficulty in learning a second language. As a result, they are worried about their grades in the exam, anxious about their manifestation in the classroom activities, and even hate having English class. The feelings of being anxious, worried, bored influence the student’s attitude to English learning. Accordingto “Emotion Infectious Theory” which is grounded in American psychologyprofessor Hatfield’s opinion, one’s affect can influence others’ in the short time so that teacher’s affect can be influenced by student’s negative affect. These negative factors repress the teacher’s motivation and self-confidence.
From the above factors, in order to solve this teaching problems, both teachers and students should change. On the one hand, teachers should have a positive attitude, trying their best to decrease students’ negative affect in English learning and improve students’ learning motivation, as well as encourage them to learn English by encouraging words, just like what Dr. Qiu Yaode said. On the other hand, students can use Englishin daily life, as a saying goes, practice makes perfect, only by using this language, can they feel it useful and helpful to learn English.
