Characteristics of spoken language in speech

Since speechis a kind of oral communication, the language in a speech belongs to the styleof spoken language, which is different from written language. Spoken language is intended basically for the ear, while written language is intended for the eye. When reading, readers can vary the speed of their reading and if the material is complex or unfamiliar, they can slow down or even stop to re-read,or refer to dictionaries when they come across difficult words or expressions.However, listeners cannot vary the pace of the speaker’s delivery. They have tofollow the speakers and understand instantly when listening to a speech.


Compared towritten language, which is distinguished by long sentences, complex vocabulary,complex arguments, and an impersonal style, spoken language is characterized by shorter sentences, simpler vocabulary arguments, and a personal style.
