THE WATER CRISIS
Shared :

Water is ubiquitous on our planet, yetthere is a dangerously small amount of potable water for humans.  Water covers about 71百分比 of Earth’s surface, but only 0.4百分比 is drinkable, accessible and to be shared among 7 billioninhabitants; as such water scarcity is becoming a very critical concern formankind.  In the GIA middle school atHuamei, our 7th grade scholars are researching the environmental andhuman consequences of water insufficiency and also methods of simple andinexpensive water purification.

For theirinaugural STEM project, the students have been conducting research, costanalysis and designing basic water purification devices.  Our young scholars first engaged inexhaustive research in order analyze the purpose and relative costs of thematerials they proposed.  Next, theycreated initial budgets for their devices and accounted for the costs of all oftheir materials.  Finally, they are nowat the stage where they are preparing to build their prototype devices whichthey will test and evaluate.

The purposefor the students to engage in such a study and practical application of waterpurification is so that the students think critically about the informationthey learn in class and begin to use that knowledge in practical and actionableways.  Additionally, the scholars beginto understand that the information they acquire through their course workextends to the real world issue of water scarcity thatthey will face as they continue on into adulthood.
